Currently the most popular player in Eindhoven and the most feared person in the rest of the Netherlands, Heurelho Gomes is unstoppable. When people ask me, what is the difference between Gomes and other worldclass keepers, I'll say that although a Buffon or Cannizares have unbelievable great reactions, Gomes can fly. YES, I'm not lying because Gomes stays longer in the air than an intercontinental-flying plane (©GHoeberX)!

Lately coaches have been giving huge credits to Heurelho Gomes. I'll list some quotes:
Aad de Mos (Trainer Vitesse): "We didn't lose to PSV. We lost to Gomes"
Ronald Koeman (Trainer PSV): "Gomes is a worldclass keeper! He will save every ball. You can only score when you aim balls at the top corner with a speed of 130 km/h"

Quotes like these, say a lot, but sometimes statistics can even say more. Gomes is keeper of PSV since 2004. Within these three seasons he gained THREE times a position in the top 10 of all-time goalless runs:

At first I saw Gomes as a kind of Barthez; great reflexes, but also a lot of stupid mistakes. But since then he really improved, and now he is truly a fantastic keeper. One thing not mentioned yet: his throws. Fantastic too see him throwing far over the midline.

PS: And Valdes should not even be mentioned in the top 50 of the best keepers of the world

yes idd he WAS a clown untill Dec.2004 I think he missed his famaly a lot back then and same about Alex But he is also fantastic as a human. I'm NOT very happy that he already played for the Selecao,he could be an exellent replacement for Sarretje

Yeah he's funny. I was once (already 2 years ago) in the train with him and he really is a funny chap. I might be confused, but I think Heldinho met him as well and had a little chat with him in Portuguese.

Heurelho Gomes was overdonderd en verbijsterd toen hij zaterdag vlak voor half acht het veld opliep. De hele westtribune was voor één keer getooid in de goud-groene kleuren van de Braziliaanse vlag. ’Gomes o goleiro grande’ stond er te lezen. Gomes, de grote doelman.

Na afloop van het duel met Heerenveen was de 25-jarige Braziliaanse keeper nog altijd diep onder de indruk van het eerbetoon. En geëmotioneerd. „Al het werk wat ik voor PSV doe en gedaan heb, wordt zo honderd keer terugbetaald.“
Hij wist vooraf nergens van. Supporters hadden spontaan besloten om Gomes te eren. „Dat geeft wel aan dat PSV een grote, hechte familie is“, vond Gomes. „In alle geledingen van de club voel je warmte. Ik heb, door het overlijden van mijn vader, een moeilijk jaar gehad. Daarom is dit een heel belangrijk moment in mijn carrière. Ik ben dankbaar dat ik dit heb mogen meemaken. Het is de mooiste prijs die ik ooit gewonnen heb. Ik hoop de fans ooit terug te kunnen betalen wat ze voor mij gedaan hebben. Ik zal ze proberen te bedanken met mijn werk op het veld.“

As reaction to the huge Brazilian flag, colours and text "Gomes, O Goleiro Grande" (portuguese for "Gomes the Great Keeper"), Gomes responded as follows after the match:
"Everything I ever done for PSV is being paid back a 100 times this way". Gomes didn't know about the action and was totally surprised by it. "That shows what a close family PSV really is. In every section of the club you can feel the warmth PSV gives. I have had a difficult year because of the death of my father. That's why this is a very important moment in my career. I'm grateful to be the one to receive this. This is the best prize, I've ever won in my career. I hope that I can pay back the fans for what they did for me. I will try to thank them with my work on the pitch".

I guess there will be a lot of tears (me included) when this man leaves PSV!
